Young people with additional support needs from Woodmill High School, Dunfermline and Glenwood High School in Glenrothes welcomed Kelly Adams, a trustee of the RSM UK Foundation, to demonstrate the impact their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) has had on them, and how the Foundation’s support has made a difference.

The young people, whose DofE participation has been funded by the RSM UK Foundation, talked about their contributions to the local community through their DofE volunteering and the positive impact they have made. They also shared stories from recent expeditions and spoke about the benefits of the DofE and the positive effect it has had on their personal development.

They also showcased what they did for each section of their DofE including volunteering at a local foodbank and writing, performing in and editing a short film. The young people have a range of additional support needs and have used the DofE Skills section to learn life skills like ironing, using a toaster and microwave, baking and healthy eating.

Jon Lowis, who runs DofE provision in Glenwood High School, said: “Today’s visit was a fantastic opportunity for us as educators to share our wonderful DofE practices. But most importantly, it was a brilliant opportunity to showcase the hard work of our pupils!”

Jenny, 15, who is currently doing their Bronze Award at Woodmill High School said: “At first, I felt a bit nervous about presenting our achievements in front of all the visitors, but in fact getting to chat to them and talk them through our DofE journey, it felt good!”

The RSM UK Foundation has supported the DofE charity for 20 years. Over the last three years, the Foundation’s funding is on track to enable 34,200 young people across the UK to start their DofE, including providing grants to 5,200 marginalised young people and fund 13 additional support needs schools and departments to launch the DofE (including Woodmill and Glenwood High Schools).

Since 2016, 193 RSM colleagues have had the opportunity to achieve a DofE Gold Award at work through DofE Business. RSM’s sponsorship enabled the DofE to launch its youth-led podcast, Navigating Now and RSM has also supported 1,000 young people to build employability skills at the DofE’s Youth Without Limits Live events across the UK.

Speaking at the visit, RSM UK partner and Foundation Trustee Kelly Adams said: “It’s fantastic to meet the young people and hear about the positive impact the DofE has had on their lives – and what they’ve learned and achieved through the programme. We’ve supported the DofE charity for a long time and remain committed to helping young people particularly those from marginalised backgrounds, so it’s brilliant to see the difference that funding makes firsthand.”

Kate Somervail, Senior Operations Manager for DofE Scotland said: “Seeing how both Glenwood and Woodmill High School have brought their DofE programmes to life through their participants was fantastic – with their pupils at the heart of the decision-making for their activities and expeditions. It was clear how engaged with DofE the groups were, and the young people were delighted to share their stories. It was a great opportunity to thank the RSM UK Foundation and show the value of their support, and the positive impact DofE has on each and every individual, young people and leaders alike!”

To do their DofE, young people aged 14-24 choose activities in four sections: improving a physical and skills activity, volunteering for a cause of their choice, and completing a demanding expedition. Along the way they have fun, grow in resilience and self-belief, discover new talents and passions, and learn practical skills to help them in future – while working towards achieving a highly respected Award.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award wants to see 1.6 million young people start their DofE by Spring 2026. The charity has launched ambitious projects to fund schools and community organisations in the UK’s most deprived areas to start offering the DofE, to expand into more prisons and young offender institutions, and to support more young people with additional needs and disabilities to achieve their DofE Award.
